Ms. Soylar recently moved to Atlanta where she is teaching and playing. Originally from Turkey where she attended conservatory from the age of 11. The afternoon’s concert will run for about an hour and will include Beethoven’s Piano Sonata #31 in A Flat Major, Op. 110, Erkin’s Impressions and Liszt’s Venezia et Napoli. Sonata #31 in A Flat Major, Op. 110 was completed in December of 1821, a year when a woman Beethoven loved died, he suffered from rheumatic fever and jaundice. The trio of songs is described as contrasting grief and beauty. Ulvi Cemal Erkin is a Turkish composer who lived from 1906 to 1972. He was integral in creating a Turkish national sound that blended traditional folk melodies into the symphonic format. Franz Liszt (1811-1886) was a sensational performer and composer of the Romantic Era who was know for great bravora and giving concert proceeds to charitable causes. Venezia et Napoli comes from a larger group of works know as Années de Pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) which includes works said to be inspired by love and nature from the composer’s time in Switzerland and Italy. As is the case with the selection by Erkin, Liszt also relied on folk music as inspiration for his work.
This concert is a part of MAA’s Live Music Patronage Program. Ms. Soylar has also been playing for week day children’s classes. It is hoped that this program will continue with live musical accompaniment for class and more salon style concerts.
