Guest Class Series – Hortan Basics with Alysea Darby

Movement Arts Atlanta is happy to announce the next instalment in our Guest Class Series, Horton Basic with Alyseia Darby. The class will be held on Saturday, March 16 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm at the Dance Space at Inman Park United Methodist Church. The class is $25 and is for dancers ages 11 through adult with a least two years of dance experience in ballet and/or modern dance. Class size is limited to 20.

The 2-hour class will include both the technique and history of American Modern Dance Pioneer Lester Horton. It will be a great introduction and in-depth look at the work of Lester Horton for the young student or the mature modern dance artist.

Ms. Darby is currently the Programs Director and Principal Female Artist for Atlanta Dance Connection. Ms. Darby is originally from Louisiana where she received here training and started her professional career at age 17. While receiving her degree at Louisiana State, she was a featured dancer in many shows including two Debbie Allen Productions, All The Right Moves, and Derek’s Song and New Venture Theatre’s Productions of Shout and The Color Purple. In 2016, she relocated to Atlanta and joined Element Circus Troupe as Principal Aerialist & Assistant Director and Atlanta Dance Connection.

Ms. Darby has performed in two production connected to Movement Arts Atlanta. In 2023, she was a principal dancer for Jesus and The Beatles and in December of 2024 she was a part of the dance ensemble of Inman Park United Methodist’s Christmas concert. Both these production featured choreography by MMA Director, Carolyn Stine McLaughlin.


Its Time for Isadora!

Movement Arts Atlanta’s major project, A Time with Isadora, will present its major presentation later this month! This evening will be on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at The Trolley Barn at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $25 and available here.

You are invited to a salon style evening of performance and conversation exploring how one artist influences many with the performance of historic reconstructions by Isadora Duncan, and José Limón and new works by Atlanta choreographers Carolyn Stine McLaughlin of Movement Arts Atlanta, Douglas Scott of Full Radius Dance and George Staib of Staib Dance.

The project has received attention from the community. It is featured as one of the four selection for the Fall Arts Preview in the Atlanta Journal Constitution in Cynthia Perry’s piece, Fall Arts Preview: new and classic works reflect rigor and inquiry. At the middle of the month, Amanda Sieradzki of ArtsATL will publish a preview of the evening. She wrote a wonderful preview of the Inman Park Dance Festival in April which included information about A Time with Isadora being part of the program with three dances from José Limón’s Dances for Isadora.

We hope the community will join MAA for it first major project presentation!


Dance in June!

For the month of June, Movement Arts Atlanta will offer weekly classes, half-day and full-day camps. Classes will begin on June 1 and run through June 24 and serve students age 5 through adult.

Each day starts with outdoor classes held at Delta Park, 40 Delta Place, 30307.Mindfulness & Movement begins each day of the schedule. This class uses Kundalini yoga breath work and movement to get the day off to a great start. Two classes are available one at 7:05 am and the second at 8:05. This class is appropriate for children above the age of five through adults. Multi-Age Beginning Modern is the next class on the schedule. The hour-and-fifteen-minute class begins at 9:15 am and is also appropriate for children above the age of five through adults.

Following these two classes, work continues indoors with Beginning/Intermediate Ballet for ages 8-12. This class is appropriate for young dancer with several years of training or the focused beginner. This technical class will focus on important ballet basics while supporting the love of movement.

Multi-Age Beginning Modern and Beginning/Intermediate Ballet can be taken together as a Half-Day Camp or as part of a Full-Day Camp. Camp is for young dancers age 8-12. Full-Day Camps will have weekly themes including Recital Redux, Ballet Russe and Story Book Dances. Camps run Monday through Thursday, except for the first week of June which is three days.

Free Dance Performances – April 29 & 30

Atlanta Ballet Center Performers

As part of the Inman Park Festival and Tour of Homes, Movement Arts Director, Carolyn Stine McLaughlin, manages the Inman Park Dance Festival. This is a free admission dance performance that presents pre-professional and professional dance companies from the Atlanta area and the State. The companies present works from the dance vocabularies of classical ballet and modern dance.

The performances are on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 at 4:0 pm and will take place in The Trolley Barn, 963 Edgewood Avenue NE, 30307. The performance are free, family friendly and last for just over an hour.

For the 2017 performances four companies will be presenting. They are Atlanta Ballet Centre Theatre, Ballethnic, Emory Department of Movement Studies, Full Radius Dance and the Georgia Ballet.

This is a great event to see several of the significant assets which are part of Atlanta’s recigh dance community.
